Stretching Your Hip Flexor

Post by looneyas »

I need some idea on stretching this muscle called Vastus Intermedius,
As due to it being tight it has effected my Knee when I do Squats.
Went to the Physo and they said I need to stretch this Muscle that Covers from Hip down to Knee.

I Hope i have explained the correct Muscle to stretch.
I need to Stretch this so that it stops playing havic with my Knee...
As the stretches that i was shown i cant realy reach the stretch that i need.

Cheers

rectus femoris

The vastus intermedius runs from your upper leg to the tuberositias tibiae which is located just below the knee on your tibia, so this muscle is not a hip flexor (because it does not run across the hip joint)
The muscle that the Psycho is talking about can be the rectus femoris or the sartorius, but it will probably be the rectus femoris, because this muscle together with the iliopsoas is often stiff with a lot of people. The function of the rectus femoris is to flex your hip & to extend your knee, so you can stretch it by extending your hip & flexing your knee.

Here you can see a stretching ex. for the rectus femoris and the iliopsoas (both of them are hip flexors)
note that by flexing your knee of the leg that's extended (the leg that your stretching) more the stretch becomes more specific for the rectus femoris http://www.exrx.net/Stretches/HipFlexors/Lunge.html

Stretching Your Hip Flexor

Vastus intermedius is a part of the quadriceps and lies under other muscles of the quadriceps (vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, vastus medialis). It is not a hip flexor.

What's with not simply asking the physio what he or she means? Or looking it up in an anatomy atlas?
