Well, first of all, I'm new here in this community and would like to say hi to everyone and hope my stay here can be of a great benefit to both myself and the rest of the members in this forum.
Since we're on this topic of strength/ speed thing, I'd like to share what I've experienced in this field.
I do bodybuilding and practise capoeira ( Brazilian martial art ) , and let me tell you all this; BIGGER MUSCLE CAN MEAN MORE SPEED! At the same time, I also agree with dragon's comment on conventional bodybuilding methods can also slow you down ( I've seen a lot of guys in my local gym where I train with big , vein-popping , muscular arms but unfortunately where they move them up and down, they're as slow as snail!) And my definition of conventional methods is that old story of doing bodybuilding/weight lifting WITHOUT much or any stretching prior to and after working out which results in less functional muscular activity.
As for my experience, I started out bodybuilding before practising capoeira, and I was very slow then. After I discovered Tom Kurz's method of stretching, my speed exploded almost overnight! ( and I 'm not kidding here) And for your info, today I still lift as heavy as before ( or even more , sometimes ) doing all the power basic and compound movements such as squats, bench presses....etc with some additional movements using weights also that closely mimic the moves that I practise in my discipline and of course, stretching a lot! And the result is nothing short of astonishing!
But I also have to include that by virtue of its nature, lifting weights or doing any sort of movements that utilize some resistance can still add up speed even without stretching.This is especially true when done in a explosive fashion,ie lifting or moving against the weights in a very fast motion. But speed can be sacrificed once it is done in a hardcore bodybuilding style without thorough stretching. As you all might be aware that lifting weights especially really heavy ones can result in a lot of lactic acid build up in the muscle tissue.Resting and stretching help relieve this lactic acid build up.So my conclusion is simple enough; lift weights and stretch. In fact that's what all experts have been advocating and recommending for all types exercises and sports disciplines, isn't it?
There are ample examples of athletes out there who are heavily built but can move fast same time. For instance, sprinters who display and carry a very muscular body frame but move at very lightning speed. Another athlete who is the current world's strongest man champion, Maruisz Pudzianowski from Poland. He has a bodybuilders physique and he also practises karate ( not sure which style). You might have seen him in action before. He really can move fast even while carrying some weights on him!And in the World's Strongest Man contest, it's not just a matter of how much you lift, but it's also a matter how fast you lift or move against resistance! Oh yeah, did I forget to mention that Maruisz is also quite flexible for his muscular frame? And last but not least, are those who practise capoeira. If you have seen some of these guys, they're very huge ( muscular body) and yet when they throw a kick to your face, their foot can reach you before you can even blink!These are some good examples of those who have very muscular physique and good speed at the same time ( not to mention great flexibility). Why or how? Simply these guys make stretching an integral part of their daily training regime, be it with weights or their technical training.
