should I still do static stretching for kicking

Post by bruce123 »

I recently read a post by Tom Kurz about dealing with stupid instructors who do static stretches as part of the warm up. It reads:

Do not worry about not doing dynamic stretches in that kind of
stupid warm-up. If you do the early morning stretch for a few
weeks, you will have all the range of motion you need for kicking
after a few minutes of even the most stupid warm-up. If you are
just beginning to use my method of stretching, and your flexibility
is not that good yet, then just spend a few minutes before the
class doing dynamic stretches on your own.

Then after a few weeks, when you have better flexibility than the
rest of the class, show it and tell them how you did it.

I have recently started TKD and my passive flexilibity is best described as average. Mr Kurz says if I do early morning stretches for a few weeks I will have the all the range of motion I need for kicking. Does this mean I should focus mainly on the dynamic stretches and just do a few static stretches as part of a cool-down after class??? Or do I need to work on increasing my static flexibility as much

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi.

If you currently have a range of motion good enough to perform all you techniques, but only after you warm up, the dynamic stretching in the morning will allow you to use your full range of motion without the need for a warmup.

If on the other hand you currently don't have a good enough range of motion to throw the techniques properly, you need to work on both your static flexibility and your dynamic flexibility.

Cheers

I feel my range of motion is not good enough even when fully warmed up. It is not terrible, but I would like my roundhouse and side kicks to be higher so I will focus on increasing my static ROM first and then developing the dynamic flexibility when I have the required level of static ROM.

I am using Synerstretch which I find very good. I alternate each day between passive stretching and isometric stretching.

thanks
