Alrite there. To get my hips parallel to the ground in the horse riding stance my legs have to be shoulder width apart, my knees bent a lot and my butt has to be pushed to the rear (so my hips arnt in line with my knees and ankles) if i try n pull them in its painfull. Iv read the articles and lots of peoples questions on the forum about the stance but still cant get it right. It takes the second set of my dynamic leg raises to the side to lose the pain in my hips joints and my ROM in this side stretch isnt as good as a side kick so I know its the wrong hip position, iv had a few goes at mild isometrics and got on good but getting hip pain (only when i try and form this position again) iv tried moving my hips forward and back and its still painfull, could anyone try and explain it again please as i feel if i could sort this my side split would be loads lower to the ground. I know this isnt very clear but im not sure how to explain the problem.

Horse Riding Stance
I've never used the horse riding stance method of isometrics but i'll try and help anyway.
It soulds like you know how it's meant to be performed already,so i'd say the problem may be trying to rush your progress.
In the 4th edition of Stretching Scientifically Mr.Kurz recommends starting the position higher or narrower(feet shoulder width) until you can progress at a rate that is comfortable with no pain.

Thanks guys. I won't push the stretch as far and see if that helps.
I did'nt realise there was a ROM in the hips you could improve, I Thought it was just the adductors preventing the split.
1. From experience will i be able to pull my hips in line with time? And is holding the stance the best way to do this?
2. I also read sumo squats would help this, is this true?
I can't proceed with the isometrics with this stance as it's not wide enough so will hips above knees do for now? it seemed to have a good effect.

Start with shoulder width stance (3 step). It doesn't have to be low in the beginning. As you gain strenght you will get lower. When you reach parallel position (hips same hight or bellow knees) concertrate on holding it longer. When you can comfortably hold it 2-3 minutes move to 5 step.....
This could take about 1-2 months, depends on your strenght level.
If you want to make FASTER progress, use GTG method.
