Stretching hazards

Post by CrazyBoy »

Hi guys! I just want to discuss with you something different: hazards (accidents) which led to full splits.
I have a example: I have a friend who can do the full side split and hold a leg up in the air due to an accident, when he was younger (he tried to do a suspended side split when he was a child and because of no training experience, he got down more than he wanted) and now he can do the side splits.
Do you know such cases?
Or
How can you explain these?

I have heard stories/rumours of Russian ballet dancers and Chinese martial artists being forced into extreme positions with the theory that when a muscle tears it heals back stronger. If the "victim" keeps stretching during this period,it will also heal back longer.
Also, children can stretch ligaments which can result in a permanent change. This may account for your friends ability to still perform the splits.

Speaking of chinese martial artists, I remember seeing Jackie Chan's biographical movie and i saw there something that frightened me: I saw the teacher (sifu) trying to improve the child's bakc flexibility for the bridge. Why this kind of method?

Having read his auto-biography the students there had to do many extreme brutal training methods.
Jackie Chan didn't actually learn Kung Fu to be a martial artist,he attended the Peking Opera school where martial arts training(along with other things) was required to perform on stage.
I can only guess that the teacher required all his students to be as flexible and acrobatic as possible so the would look more graceful and stand out on stage.
