I have recently added a stretch into my routine which has greatly increased my kicking flexibility. Tom Kurz suggests that the pain in the side of the hip when trying to do side leg raises or splits is because many people are past the age where stretching ligaments was possible and thus tilting your pelvis realigns the hip joint so its ligaments relax.
I am not arguing with the Tom on this but I have incorporated a stretch into my routine that stretches the hip abductors before working on stretching my adductors.
The outer hip was always a sticking point for me even when I tilted my pelvis forward. By stretching the abductors before the side split stretch I can feel the stretch in my adductors more and my progress has improved significantly
There is a picture of it here - http://www.row2k.com/physio/thoracic.html
Tiliting the pelvis vs hip stretch
I also include this stretch in my routine.I find it more intense if you lie back and lower your bent leg across your body(this stretches the obliques too).
I personally find it more beneficial to perform them after doing the splits.Sometimes if i've held the splits for some time and get spasms in my hips this stretch can really help.

help with the pelvic tilt!
I guess I'm being incredibly stupid here, but when he tell s us to "tilt the pelvis forward to reduce hip pain" is he referring to the TOP of my pelvis so that the front of my pelvic bone is beginning to angle to the floor or the bottom of my pelvic bone? Though neither seems to eliminate my discomfort. I'm only 28, so I don't really know what the trouble could be. Any help?

help with the pelvic tilt!
Tilt the top of the pelvis. See drawings and photos in Stretching Scientifically or on the DVD Secrets of Stretching.
