Newbie looking for advise on a stretching programme

Post by SD »

I have recently discovered this forum and happily registered. I am a 33-year-old karateka, who renewed training four months ago after a break of 15 years. Back in the old days I did not have outstanding flexibly of legs either, but now it is even worse. So, in fact, I consider myself a complete beginner in flexibility training.

Following strong recommendations in a karate forum I recently bought Tom Kurz’s book Stretching Scientifically and DVD Secrets of Stretching. With great interest I read the book and saw the DVD, which made me understand that my stretching exercises years back were quite wrong. I am now trying to design my own stretching program based on the book and the DVD. There is quite a lot of information in these two references and it takes time to digest it all, understand it properly and start exercising without making big mistakes.

I would be very much grateful if the more experienced people on this forum could suggest weekly programmes for beginners (types of exercises, sequence, frequency, etc.). I am looking for not a too busy programme; after all I am not a professional athlete. I usually have karate training twice to three times a week.

Many thanks in advance and I am looking forward to exchanging info on this forum.

Hi,

First begin to internalize the new habits that Mr Kurz mention in terms of what NOT to do, when to do, and what.
In parallel, begin with a strength program, just like it is in the video, it is very clear.
Then you can decide where to start, what works for you best.
It is hard to sew a program for an individual like a personal trainer. We don't know you, we can't track you progress and we can't take a responsibility for injuries.
Kurz's method is general and can be suit to everyone, but one have to be smart to take those priciples and apply them to his own program rutine.

We will be happy to help you if you have specific Qs.

Thank you Gil,

Your advise seems quite reasonable - I should indeed start with strength exercises first while I am trying to familiarize myself better with the method.

I surely did not expect that anyone could coach me as a personal trainer, but I was wondering how other beginners started and what weekly programmes they had. I am aware that stretching is highly personalized training and I shall adjust the programme to my personal physical condition and capabilities.

This is a great forum and I already found here answers to some of my questions, but might post some other questions in future.

Regards,

SD
