Hi.

Assuming you don't have any medical or alignment issues...

Pain in the hips and knees is often caused by a lack of conditioning. You need to work on your strength, which will in turn increase the stability of your joints and stop the pain. Horse stance is a great conditioning exercise for side splits. Hold it as long as you can stand. As you get stronger and you gain more endurance, your pain will subside. If you have access to weights, you might also consider wide legged (sumo) squats.

It would be a good idea to back off a bit until your conditioning is such that your pain has gone.

Cheers

Tim may be right as the main cause of this hip problem is said to be conditioning.

I can relate to you well because I suffer from the same thing. I have tryed everthing in the books to do. I have purchased every detailed manual and spoken with many of the best local specialists.
The most recent venture I have endured was chiropractic adjustments. This is what is interesting... My pelvis was rotated down (hips rotating foward) to a point where when I squat, horse stance, leg raise and split... it friggin hurts!
I have been at chiropractor for nearly 2 weeks now and things have changed with my hips. not to the best of my hopes but in only two weeks I feel very little hip pain. Still early days but I am optimistic.
Its actually a good idea as I have had a problem with my neck for years too and now it moves freely.
With my problem, I could get into splits with the easiest being with a side split machine due to being able to wind the crank easier than trying to slide down. I get into full splits and have for many years but now thanks to the chiropractor (like I said its still early days) I get little pain now!

Hope this helps and hopefully if this works for me I will share what to do with all of you. Fingers crossed.
