Dynamic stretching to do front splits?

Post by Moe »

The dynamic stretch in which you kick your foot to the back stretches the hamtring of the supporting leg, right? I remember doing so much of them with the right leg once that i just slide into a front split with my left leg in front. So as a question, if i do dynamic stretches everyday will it improve my front split or is this only a temporary stretch?

Hi.

Yes, you are stretching the hamstring of the support leg and the hip flexor (knee down) and/or adductor (knee to the side) of the rear leg.

I guess any stretching you do will improve your flexibility, so long as you don't injure yourself. If you do a search of "stretching and gymnastics", or "stretching and cheerleading" and you will read some really old-fashioned and sometimes dodgy stuff about flexibility, yet both of these disciplines require extreme flexibility an strength.

The real question is, what will get you to the level of flexibility you require in the quickest and safest way? For most people, leg swings on their own won't be the correct route.

But if it works for you... :)

Don't fast stretches only relax your muscles for a short time.
If you want to drop into a split and jump back up than it's ok. If you want to be able to stay in a split, somehow I am for slow stretching.
