Maybe a strange question to you guys, but I have a question.
Last week I've started to think and came up with the idea of starting my stretching routine by having 2 glasses of alcohol first (to loosen the muscles up a bit).
This idea came to my mind, because (if I understand correctly) it's a well-known fact that your muscles become more supple after using alcohol..
- Well, I'm trying this since a few days now, and indeed I'm starting to realise that I have a higher pain-barriere (after drinking some glasses of alcohol), resulting in higher levels of stretching-performance... limits which I normally can't reach.
Now my question is... what kind of influence does this have on my "overall performance", keeping in mind that (starting Friday next week) I will continue to stretch without alcohol again?
Will I have an advantage because of the fact that I DID use alcohol this week (and my limit was higher because of this)??
Are there any people around here who have any experience with the use of alcohol, prior to starting their stretching routine?
Yes, I know... it's not an average question.
Stretching under the influence of alcohol?

The effect of alcohol on the muscles is to cause weakness, this is what you're seeing as suppleness. You lose co-ordination after drinking acohol tooIceman wrote:This idea came to my mind, because (if I understand correctly) it's a well-known fact that your muscles become more supple after using alcohol...
You don't have a higher pain threshold, you've just numbed your current one.Iceman wrote:- Well, I'm trying this since a few days now, and indeed I'm starting to realise that I have a higher pain-barriere (after drinking some glasses of alcohol), resulting in higher levels of stretching-performance... limits which I normally can't reach..
I never drink alcohol at all(even socially) so have no personal experience.Iceman wrote:Now my question is... what kind of influence does this have on my "overall performance", keeping in mind that (starting Friday next week) I will continue to stretch without alcohol again?

I would assume that:-
1)When you're not under the influence your overall performance will remain the same.
2)Your flexibility levels will return back to what they were before the alcohol experiment. You've already talked yourself into believing that the alcohol is responsible for any gains you made without feeling pain. Therefore, when you start to stretch without alcohol in your system your mind won't allow you to go past a certain point.
This is the point of isometrics-to strengthen your muscles in an extreme position so you will be psychologically stronger to handle the extra work too.

Cool question! I remember doing this myself, but unconsciously. Having drunk a few beers with my friends, I went back home to perform my daily stretching routine (this was when I was stretching wrongly) and from what I remember it was quite fine. Don't remember though if I saw some progress or not.
Please allow me a week or so to do this. Ok? ![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)
