I was wondering whether the forward stance can be considered as an isometric stretch for the hamstring, because when you correctly assume the position you put alot of weight on your front leg and you can actually feel it the hamstring. The other day in training we had to assume this stance for a few minutes and I started getting muscle spasms after a while ( i did the mistake of doing isometrics before the training session).
The next day my hamstrings were extremely sore and I did not do any stretching for 3 days. So I wonder if this stance really works the hamstrings?
here is an example of a forward stance : http://alexng.net/fsuwushu/reference/bow2.jpg

I guess that depends how deep you go.If you assume a deep lunge you will feel it in the glutes but your hamstring isn't in a fully stretched position.
You will feel it in the hamstring but i wouldn't call it an isometric stretch for the hamstring. If you're using that stance as an isometric stretch it should be for the rear leg(adductors/hip flexors).
