Split with weights

Post by Haakon_Myrseth »

When I stretch using only my body weight in the split I usually end up about 30 cm of the floor. When I hold two 10kg weights in my hands while doing isometric side split I usually get into a side split within 2 sets. The problem is that it is so painful that I can only stay in the full side split for approximately 10 seconds, contracting my muscles, before it's so painful that I have to get out of the stretch.
Should I continue using my body weight while stretching isometrically or is it okay holding dumbells in my hands, even though I can't stay in the full side split for more than 10 seconds, contracting my legs to build strength, before it gets too painful and I have to get out of the stretch?

I would stick to weightless isometrics and just build up your stamina, doing it for longer or harder or both until you reach a full split without weights.

Split with weights

You can also try holding weights in a deep horse-riding stance, for example, for two 30 sec sets in the 5-step and another two in the 7-step stance, and then try to go lower without the weights.

Thanks Mr. Kurz.
By the way. I just want to say that this forum is great, and I'm looking forward to learn a lot from it.
