Weird sensation/pain when doing side splits
Ok, I don't consider this an injury so I didn't post it in the injury section. And I wouldn't call it pain really, it's just uncomfortable. Anyway, when I do side splits (relaxed) and when I do legextension to the side (dynamic stretch) I get this weird sensation in my hips. I think it's in the actually hip joint or it's the muscle on the outside of the hip. I've been hearing about hip adductors tensing if they are strong, is this what that is or do I have some other problem? I have a leg stretching machine and I don't get the pain at all in them when I use that. Thanks.
Hi,
I wouldn't think it's the adductors(unless it's a refered pain/sensation).You say you feel it in your hip so it could possibly be an abductor problem.
I assume the leg stretching machine you have is the type you sit in upright and it stretches your legs outwards to the side.
This may indicate that your hip position in the other movements you describe is different. If you aren't tilting your pelvis your femur will jam into your pelvis preventing you going any further.
This could explain the sensation you're getting during dynamic side leg raises but it is unusual for relaxed splits.
If you're doing relaxed side splits correctly(distributing your body weight between your legs and arms) then this would simulate the same position you're in whilst sat in the leg machine-legs and body forming a 90 degree angle(or close to it).
I can't recall ever feeling anything like this myself. The only thing that comes close that i've felt in these positions is cramp.
