Is hip pain normal?

Post by samus »

About 3 weeks ago, I began using the Kurz method of dynamic stretching to improve my kicking ability for the two systems I train in. However, while I notice improvements, I began having sharp paing in hip joints after performing these stretches. These are bad enough that I fear it will affect my sparring. I am 19 years oldand perform the stretches almost every morning and then again in the evening with practice kicks? What is causing these pains? Am I over doing it? Could I be doing it wrong? have you guys every experienced this? The pain is not noticable when I am not performing MA specific tasks the majority of the time.

Thanks ahead of time.

If you have only just started using the Kurz method then yes,i'd say twice per day every day is probably over doing it.
I have experienced hip pain, clicking sounds, etc and dropped the dynamic stretches to every other day which did make an improvement.
There are other options such as videoing yourself to check your technique is good. You could alter the stretch that seems to be giving you pain(assuming it is only 1 of the stretches that is aggrivating your hips).I did this myself,i perform deep lunges in place of rear leg swings, again this helped me.

Another option is to drop the early morning stretches and only perform them in the evenings. The purpose of the early morning stretches is to have the ability to kick cold throughout the day.If this isn't a priority to you then you could drop it.
