There are lots of variations of the squat but i prefer conventional squats(like you describe).
If you want to increase strength, heavy weight/low reps are the way to go.
I only squat once per week.

Hey guys, sorry I've been away from the forum so much. The last 4-5 months have been pretty hectic.

hb18, given that you aren't very familiar with squats I would recommend that you take a look at Mr. Kurz's explanation of the squat. Dragon is correct that squats are an incredible (probably the single best) exercise you can do. But there are plenty of details in performing the exercise that can go wrong and expose yourself to injury. Don't let my comments scare you from doing squats; just make sure you know what you are doing. I would go even further and suggest that you purchase Stuart McRobert's Insider's Guide to Weight Training Technique to get a much more detailed description of good squatting technique.
