A double bodyweight deadlift for girls?

Post by Maxim »

Hi
I have started to put in to practice the info of Tom's DVD since a couple of weeks and I am progressing fast! So fast in fact that I have intrigued my younger sister and now she wants to do the stretching too. 8)

I progressed pretty fast so far I think because I had at least a little background in strength training(100kg squat for 5 reps, 94 kg clean and jerk @ 69 bodyweight, age 17).

She is a 15 year old advanced tennis player who suffered a shoulder injury due to muscular imbalances(strong anterior deltoids+pectorals+trunks flexors, while weak in the posterior deltoids+ rotator cuff+spinal errector+romboideus etc)
She started olympic style lifting in october on my advice in order to strengthen the weak muscles(good advice, right :?:), so she is getting strength training 3 times a week.

My question is: does she have to start with the beginner's workout, since she only cleans 40kg at 50 kg bodyweight(not a double bw deadlift at all) or just let her wait untill she reaches adequate levels of back strength for the specific strength exercises and isometrics?

If your sister is still injured i doubt Olympic(explosive) style lifts should be used for rehab.
This would all depend on the advice of a qualified doctor/power lifting coach.

Generally, isometrics are not recommended for young people. Here is the article from stadion going into more detail:-

Sorry i can't be more help,i'm not experienced in Olympic weight lifting.

Dragon, as always your reply was very helpful(good link)

Her injury is better now, but unless she strengthens these lagging muscles, the injury will return super fast once she picks up serious tennis training again(especially the serve).

The olympic lifts are one of the best ways to to this I have been told, but inaccessible to most since personal coaching is required. We are very lucky to have a qualified coach

Should I let her do the 'beginner workout' then?(mostly static stretches)

You are lucky to have a coach qualified in Olympic lifting.

Yes,the strengthening and relaxed stretches should be fine in the beginner program.
