knee injuries
knee injuries
To begin, I know I should see a Dr but I need some advice before as the last consultation on a problem brought me before two different Dr and an assistant who gave 3 seperate opinions and one was from an orthopedic surgeon. In my test for 4th dan I injured my right knee. I am not sure now. It has been very easy for it to get quite sore for several months but nothing like this. I don't know if I was kicked during sparring or in the self-defense section on the mats twisted it when being knocked down during what I would call rather realistic, fast, and powerful take down techniques. The left side of the right knee has a black and blue mark that is almost in an horseshoe shape but wider. The knee was swollen but over two weeks has come down but still slightly swollen. The pain for walking on a flat surface has significally receded but the pain for going either up or down stairs is quite serious. Is this a bruise, a muscle pull or more seriously a tendon or cartledge damage?? I need some input here on how to tell the difference as I don't trust some local Dr.'s
I am a 49 year old martial artist with 32 years & 5 black belts. I teach Tang Soo Do with a little Wado-ryu. Being 49 I can always use suggestions on training methods that work for my age without overdoing it.
I wont give u any advice here cause I`m not an expert on this.
About you not trusting ur DR- hows this:
My Mom has a MAsters in Physical Education.
My aunt has a Bachelors in Physical Eduvation.
My family Dr is a school frnd of my Mom.
2 of my Cousins and 1 of Sis-in-law are Dr.
But as far as their practical hands on knowledge is concerned they know **** about exercise and its effect on the Human body.
I`m seeing this Physio now -
And obviously none of the above mentioned people know this.
I`m not saying that shes the best. But its her attitude-shes lifter herself.
and shes ready to admit her mistake if someone proves her wrong and she wants to learn more...I can make this out .
When we discussed my problem she asked me a host of questions about my training, diet etc...
When I mentioned this to the some of the above mentioned people they all shot back "see! I told u Liting wts and all that Karate-Kung-fu u do(which is actually Judo) is bad for you.."
Their advice was to quit all sports completely...
My advice is this: SHOP AROUND.
Try and get someone whos into sports himself.

Thank you for your reply. You made some good suggestions. I didn't mean to come off as being against Dr's but I have seen good and the bad. I am offended when I pay good money and need their help and I get a two or three minute discussion and it is always done and he is on his way. In the time since I posted this originally I found an orthopedic surgeon who handles the AAAlevel baseball team for the Chicago White Sox I believe. He also is the main Dr for a number of the schools in our area for sports injuries. He discovered that the previous Dr's had made hasty judgements and the knee would never have healed because the meniscus pad was torn and there were some bone chips and fluid in there. I had the surgery and due to age the recovery has been long but a good recovery. I don't think I will ever get back 100% but I feel very little to no pain and I can move around okay. I just can't jog or do squats and leg presses any more. Now I have a partial torn achilles tendon on the opposite leg or foot. This thing of growing older is a real downer but I won't give up, I will try to be a good example to my students and hang in there and demonstrate a good work ethic and show that if making black belt was easy everyone would have one. Thanks again...Tang Soo

About the guys you are seeing -its a grt thing that hes involved in sports.
These people do have a big advantage over people who are just consider therapy and medicine as a job.....
And about ur condition-I dont mean to be offensive -but reading about ur problems has made me more conscious about my injury.
I`m not doing until I`m completely healed...
