Survey: Are you able to do the side split?

Post by Jan »

Hi,

as a sports research scientist, I want to make a survey with the following questions:

1. Are you able to do the side split?

2. In case you can: With which method did you achieve the side spilt?

a.) Isometric Stretches
b.) Relaxed Stretches
c.) Dynamic Stretches
d.) Others

3. How long did you train for?

4. During the training have you been injured?

5. How old are you?

Everything is voluntary!

I thought, that these questions could be exciting!

Thank you very much.

All the best

Jan :D

Hi.

1) Yes. I can do full side splits with my toes up, but not with feet flat and back upright. I always practiced the toes up way as a kid because that's how I saw dancers do it. To have my feet flat I have to have my body flat on the floor. I think this is called roadkill splits.

2) I did lots of relaxed stretching between set of Squats when I was a kid. I had no goal in mind. Someone told me I should stretch between sets so I did. :)

3) It took between 3 and 4 years to get side splits, although it was not my goal at the time. Just one of many stretches I did while weight training.

4) As a kid I had many minor injuries while stretching, mostly because I was overtrained or overkeen. :) I've injured myself a few times in karate, inevitably because of poor technique as I've got tired towards the end of the class and my concentration has slipped. You've got to keep your mind strong and your technique good, even when your body wants to give up :)

5) I'm now 37. I did side splits for the first time at about 18, before I started Karate. The flexibility came in pretty handy when I started Karate. It helped me progress very fast.

Cheers

1)Yes.

2)When i first started training i achieved it with relaxed stretching. After a long lay off i came back and achieved it with isometrics.

3)I first started training when i was 5 years old. Can't recall how long it took before i was flexible.I stopped training when i was 18 due to injury,re-started when i was about 28.Think it took about a year to regain my flexibility(can't recall exactly).

4)Oh yes.

1. Yes

2.Relaxed - first time, second time: I allmost did them with isometrics from horse stance, than I stoped for few months, then I started again with strenght exercises for legs and 1 day I just did a split again (I'm not sure which method - I just slide in the split).

3. for the first time:2 years, second - I don't know exactly (one day I just did it - but it was under 1 year

4. Yep

5. 29 (since yesterday - time flies).
