Another isometrics question

Post by dannyboy »

Being my first post I thought I would give a bit of background, I have practised traditional karate for approx 4 years but due to real life I had to stop. I have now recommenced with freestyle karate and hope to be the best I can. However, I still have the problem with getting the kicks high which is an aspect I really want to work on.

Following on from another post I had a couple of questions about stretches;

1. I am currently 21 inches from a front split. Is this too bad to start isometric stretches for the front split? I noticed in the other post that it was mentioned that if your split is good enough then commence with isometric stretching.

2. If I am too bad for isometric stretching what do I need to do to get closer to floor level? I have the secrets of stretching dvd and have commenced the dynamic stretching in the am and pm. Will performing the adductor flies and front and side lunges as shown in the video improve my flexibility?

I would greatly appreciate some input as I seem to be in a stagnant pool of inflexibility.

Thanks in anticipation of your replies!

As I understand it, it doesnt matter how good your flexibility is now - as long as you have good leg strength you can do isometric exercises.

It sounds as though my side split height isnt that much better than yours, but I've been able to perform isometric exercises quite comfortably for a week. Obviously a little bit early for me to see any major improvement in my flexibility, will post results on here in a few weeks' time!

As Mat said,It's the strength that determines if you are ready for isometrics.
For the front split though(one leg in front of the other) even if you are ready for isometrics you may still be too far from the floor to keep your balance.If you are ready then consentrating on each muscle at a time would probably be best to start with:-hamstrings,hip flexor/thigh,and adductors as described in Mats original question.
