Re: Knee "popping"
I have a similar problem when I go down into a very low squat. Vigorous stretching seems to alleviate it, so I've had to conclude that it's tightness somewhere..

Re: lower back pain due to tight hamstrings
What is the advantage to a stiff legged deadlift? Bent leg DL looks significantly more technically difficult. I'm afraid of doing it incorrectly. Conventional deadlift is very straight forward. The conventional deadlift is the bent leg deadlift. I wouldn't say one has more of an advantage over the ...

Re: lower back pain due to tight hamstrings
How exactly did you confirm that tight hamstrings was the problem? I'm just curious. You mention that skiing aggrevated the condition but that doesn't seem like a "smoking gun" to me. Is there something else that convinced you that it was a hamstring problem? I'm not a doctor and know very little a...

lower back pain due to tight hamstrings
Hello Mr Kurtz and everyone else. For as long as I can remember I've had lower back pain and weak back. I sit in front of a computer for work which doens't produce good healthy back. I've been to various doctors, physiotherapists, sports doctors (kineseologists?) and chiropractors. Out of the number...

This is probably one of the most useful and insightful posts I've ever read. I wish I found this ten months ago when I started hapkido. Or, better yet, 10 years ago when I sat down and did nothing... It was not until recently that I realized that my school was very good at teaching technique but doe...

Thanks jrlefty, I think between you and the book I figured out what's going on. I was doing some of the stretches from the book (the very same ones we do in the dojang) and it made me realize that my thigh (groin?) muscles are not up to par. Basically, sitting down, I can spread my legs only up to a...

jrlefty, thanks for posting such an extensive and useful post. I do have a couple of quick questions about your suggestions: Chambering by lifting the thigh to the side causes hip pain and possible inflammation. The reasons are explained in the previous article on the side kick in TaeKwonDo Times Ja...

advice needed. Do I need more strength?
Hello all. I need your input on how to progress with my training. I'll keep it short.. I haven't done any execise for a while, and about 6 months ago I joined a Hapkido school. Since then my obvious lack of flexibility has been disappointing. Specifically, I'm having a lot of trouble with a round ho...
