Hi, Kevin, What is your purpose of strength training? There's the different strength training method for different sport you know. If you are doing body building work-to-failure is correct but you should allow for sufficient rests between sets. On the other hand work-to-failure is not good and usual...

Alternating Hot / Cold Water

In Science of Sports Training Mr Kurz advises alternating hot / cold water in a shower to speed up recovery. Does it mean a drastic change of water temperature or gradual? Thanks.

And sparring exercise, not competition, is a good combination of aerobic / anaerobic. Plan a good sparring exercise.

For sparring competitions you need very good aerobic fitness and leg strength. I've seen many talented fighters in my country fail in competitions because of a lack of the two. The reason why you could not keep your pace in the last rounds may either be not enough aerobic fitness or not enough leg s...

Yeah, get away from machines. They are dangerous. I don't understand why people use them when there are plenty of ways to build muscular / aerobic strength even without anything.

Running, squats, lunges... are plenty of work for your legs.

Feel Droopy Lifting Weights

Hi, Recently I am changing my strength workouts from low resistance/high reps to high resistance/low reps to develop max strength. The schedule looks like this: warm-up, one set of 20 ~ 50 reps with light weights, and then several sets of 3 ~ 6 reps with heavy weights. The problem is when I do the l...

Hi, Mark, Thank you for sharing your experience and the advice. Sports medicine is not so common and immediately available in this part of the world (Taiwan). For such injuries we take Chines therapy which includes heat treatment with some herbal stuff, acupuncture, massage, and some "electro" treat...

Hi, Carl, If you are talking about sports TKD (WTF sparring), I would say that static flexibility would not help improve your kicking much (not much enough to let you feel the difference). Nevertheless I find that static flexibility (isometrics) improves my strength and endurance, and the great bene...

Imbalance between right / left leg

Hi, My right hamstring (primarily the area at back of the knee) was hurt in sparring. I'm not sure if I pulled it or it was kicked, anyway it was hurt. I rested several days and felt OK. After that I tried to stretch and felt stiffness in the area. The thing that really bothers me is that when I do ...

I don't have problem with the side leg raise. But I do not keep my feet parallel all the way. When I did the side raise my feet would be parallel at start and gradually rotated outward (heel pointed more toward the target), and keep the torso as upright as possible. If I maintained the feet position...

Mike,

Thanks very much. That really gives me a new perspective. I tried a bit of the depth jump as you describe and felt great. However, I have a little problem with my right hamstring so I shall try to fix it before jumping to plyometrics.

Taekwondo's 540-degree spinning kicks

Hi,

Are there exercises to build the capability to perform the 540-degree (or some people call it 720-degree) spinning whip / back kicks in taekwondo?

Thanks :)
