So reading that article you hyperlinked to... So long as I don't get any weird aches, pains, DOMS etc and barring low fitness levels or pre-existing injuries/problems the exercises with ankle weights done in a slow and controlled manner should not necessarily lead to arthritis. Is this the gist of it?

Mr Kurz, Initially an instructor told me (many moons ago) that doing kicks with ankle weights would improve the speed of my kicks if I did them in an explosive fashion, but after trying it a few times I ditched the idea due to pain in the hips, knees, ankles etc. Also I noticed no increase in speed,...

It depends what the cause of the tight tendon was. It's either: - 1) The sartorious muscle (running down the quads from the outer hip to the inside of the knee) 2) Or it's the semi-membranous/semi-tendinous (the other muscles that form the hamstrings) For (1) - Do a knee raise with ankle weights exc...

I found that I was very stiff when I first started martial arts and I've made some good progress by focusing in on my weaknesses for a few weeks and then doing my "regular" stretches. I had a tight tendon running down the inside of my knee so I performed exercises to loosen the tendon and associated...

I have a leg stretcher and I would get on just fine without it. I bought it foolishly thinking it would improve my flexibility (about 6-9 months into starting martial arts). In itself it won't help at all, and Kurz puts that point over quite well when talking about Eatern Block olympians. However I'...

All I would say is play it by ear. You won't know until you try. I've experimented with leg swings and I tried doing sets of 30 reps, 2 sets of 15, 4 sets of 10 etc etc. In the end I found it best to do 2 sets of 10 in the morning and 2 sets of 10 at night followed by relaxed stretches. I always try...

Another good workout. I think giving the sartorious muscle a bit of attention has been the missing link for me. Managed to do 2 mins of ISO stretching in box split (6x5sec bursts then 1x30sec burst x 2 sets) at 150 degrees, then 3 mins of relaxed box stretch at 145 degree with very little pain in th...

The reason for the strange weights lifted on the leg press compared to the leg extension is that I put a lot into the leg press that I don't have that much left for the leg extension (if I did the leg extension first I'd probably do about 120kg). I think supersetting extensions with curls also robs ...

There's a cable station at my gym that I can strap my ankle into and let the weight pull my leg up in the same direction and range of motion as a leg swing to the side. Then I have to pull against the weight to work my adductors. I've tried this for a while (around 2 months) and noticed no differenc...

How long is "extended rest"? I don't like the sound of that! I had around 2 months off all activity that was more strenuous than drinking coffee or flicking TV channels due to appendicitis (this started back in April this year). When I came back to training my legs were pretty weak (I could ...

Thanks for that. I seem to remember a physio telling me about having a tight Patella but that it had more to do with the semitendrinous and semimembranous (prob spelled that completely wrong!) being tight . She suggested I strengthen and improve the flexibility of those two muscles to releive the te...

No one got any ideas on how to ditch the pain down the inside of the knees? Is it due to an inflexibility issue in my hams/quads or a strength issue in the hams/quads? Also can anyone suggest a good quad stretch? When I try the one suggested in the book (grab rear leg in a partial front split) I fee...

Knee pain when doing side splits
I'm 27 and I've been doing martial arts for around 3 years. Although my flexibility has come on a lot, I get pain on the inside of the knees when I try to do side splits. I'm about 20 degrees each side from being flat but the pain in my knees is something else. I've tried the stength exercises for t...
