Acrobatic Workout for the General Public

Acrobatics for Everybody is especially important for coaches and instructors as it shows how to run a tumbling workout for athletes who are not acrobats or gymnasts.

The video on this DVD was shot during a typical workout for the general public (not for acrobats!), run by coach Obrebski and his assistant coach Pawel Grzybczyk—expert instructors of acrobatics. Anyone can come to such a workout and for a small fee have the use of the gym and the coaches’ instruction and help.

We decided to release this video because it features average young people, not especially talented, from late teens to thirties, learning tumbling skills. You can see how those people learn front and back somersaults, back handsprings, flying cartwheels, etc., quickly and with no fear.

These are people who work or study full time, or do both–study and work. Some have been to such workouts for a few months, for others it was their first workout. Some of them come three times a week, some just once a week–whatever their work or study schedule permits.

This DVD is especially important for coaches and instructors as it shows how to run a tumbling workout for athletes who are not acrobats or gymnasts.

Instructors watching this workout will pick up some tricks of the trade, some ideas for use in their workouts. Athletes who want to learn tumbling will benefit too: Just watching others practice is a proven method of improving one’s technique. During this workout every technique is done by people of different build, ability, and experience, so the viewer can learn from their errors and how they are corrected. (To learn each of the basic tumbling techniques step-by-step watch the DVD Acrobatic Tumbling: From Rolls to Somersaults.)

CONTENT OF THE WORKOUT

General Warm-up and Stretching

Specific Warm-up:

  • Headstands
  • Handstands
  • Kips
  • Rolls

Main Part (Tumbling)—here you will see how expert instructors teach and correct people of disparate ability the following skills:

  • Cartwheel
  • Round-off
  • Butterfly
  • Front Headspring and Front Handspring
  • Back handspring (flic flac) on mini trampoline
  • Back handspring (flic flac) on the floor
  • Aerial cartwheel (a cartwheel without putting the hands on the floor)
  • Front tucked somersault (front flip)
  • Back tucked somersault (back flip)
  • Back tucked somersault (back flip) off the wall
  • Tumbling Runs

PLUS A BONUS:

A p.e. lesson showing how to teach a handstand. The handstand is the prerequisite skill for learning tumbling moves such as cartwheel, roundoff, front handspring, and back handspring.

We decided to add this lesson to the DVD because the teaching method and exercises used in it are different than those shown on Acrobatic Tumbling DVD.

This is a well-run lesson conducted by a competent teacher. The lesson flows well, keeps children’s interest, with practically no time wasted. Exercises are well selected for the task and children’s ability. Seeing those different exercises from the lesson may give more choices to instructors and students.

Testimonials

“I enjoyed viewing Acrobatics For Everybody a great deal. Mr. Kurz’ voice-over translation is unhurried and relaxed, and the un-rehearsed nature of the practice sessions made me feel as though I were right in in the gym in Poland! Although some of the athletes were of above average ability in my opinion (perhaps I have been in the US for too long 😉 ) many were of average ability just as described in the video’s promotional description. I found this segment of the video encouraging and motivating me for review the Acrobatic Tumbling DVD. The inclusion of both male and female athletes (some quite attractive) also made for easy viewing 🙂 )

“The inclusion of the PE Class for the Handstand is a very nice addition. It is a great plus to see the additional exercises used to this end (to complement those seen in the Acrobatic Tumbling DVD) just as Mr. Kurz describes, but something I particularly enjoyed was having an opportunity to see how a European PE class is run with this age group. In my experience, it can be difficult to convey in words the differences in training in Europe vs training in the US. Consequently, the sequence of exercises, the exacting nature of the purpose and finality of the activities chosen, the instructor’s demeanor, all were components of value upon viewing. Although I am no longer coaching, I still enjoyed viewing this material and am certain it would benefit current athletic coaches of all levels.

“Overall, I believe the video compliments and bundles very well with the Acrobatic Tumbling DVD, and I would recommend it to coaches (and certainly athletes) interested in improving their skill set.”

“I think it is excellent!… It reminded me of how physical education has either been eliminated or seriously watered down in our schools in the USA…. Especially, as compared to Central and Eastern Europe. Being aware of how the physical fitness of our youth and adults has so seriously deteriorated in the USA, there is no doubt that this kind of a product from STADION is seriously needed here for our youngsters and adults as well as for those interested in athletics and martial arts.

“It also reminded me of when I was a child and then years later when I was a director of the American Turners organization in Rochester, NY, 40 years ago. We had two excellent coaches in our gymnastics program from Central Europe, and how parents supported our program even with the better PE programs in our schools back then. Today, when our kids need even more of those types of programs they no longer exist. I hope your DVD’s in this area of physical education can help to fill the huge gap that now exists and can help to build back some of the fitness and health for our kids and adults.”
