I understand what you are getting at here, your objection is certainly valid considering the current usages of these words and controversies regarding DNA versus mental identity.

At the same time, I do not imagine this to be any purposeful snub or nose-thumbing. I believe in many cases the word 'gender' is chosen due to the erotic attachments placed on the word 'sex'. It helps to... 'desexualize' the terminology, perhaps.
