Below you can see sample teaching sequences featured on the DVD Acrobatics for Everybody.

Keep in mind that these clips are only excerpts from a typical workout, so do not expect them to show all the learning steps for the presented skills. To see all the learning steps, view the DVD Acrobatic Tumbling: From Rolls to Handsprings and Somersaults.

The video on this DVD was shot during a typical workout for the general public (not for acrobats!), run by coach Obrebski and his assistant coach Pawel Grzybczyk—expert instructors of acrobatics. Anyone can come to such a workout and for a small fee have the use of the gym and the coaches' instruction and help.

Coaches Obrebski and Grzybczyk teach at the acrobatic club DKS Targówek in Warsaw, Poland. This club has won national championships 24 times, and its members bring medals from European and World Championships. The club has about 150 members who compete but it also offers classes for the general public, both youth and adults.

We decided to release this video because it features average young people, not especially talented, from late teens to twenties or thirties, learning tumbling skills. You can see how those people learn front and back somersaults, back handsprings, flying cartwheels, etc., quickly and with no fear.

This DVD is especially important for coaches and instructors as it shows how to run a tumbling workout for athletes who are not acrobats or gymnasts.

It is an after-hours workout for regular people, who want to learn tumbling and other acrobatic skills. These are people who work or study full time, or do both--study and work. Some have been to such workouts for a few months, for others it was their first workout. Some of them come three times a week, some just once a week--whatever their work or study schedule permits.

I like this workout. To ignorants it looks like after the warm-up no one is in charge. Actually everything is under firm control of two instructors. Everybody gets as much help as they need, no one is pushed to do skills beyond what they are ready for.

Instructors watching this workout will pick up some tricks of the trade, some ideas for use in their workouts. Athletes who want to learn tumbling will benefit too: Just watching others practice is a proven method of improving one's technique. During this workout every technique is done by people of different build, ability, and experience, so the viewer can learn from their errors and how they are corrected. (To learn each of the basic tumbling techniques step-by-step watch the DVD Acrobatic Tumbling: From Rolls to Somersaults.) There is an extra attraction shown during this workout: A full teaching sequence for the butterfly and for the back somersault off the wall.

CONTENT OF THE WORKOUT

General Warm-up and Stretching
Specific Warm-up:

  • Headstands
  • Handstands
  • Kips
  • Rolls

Main Part (Tumbling)—here you will see how expert instructors teach and correct people of disparate ability the following skills:

  • Cartwheel
  • Roundoff
  • Butterfly
  • Front Headspring and Front Handspring
  • Back Handspring on mini trampoline
  • Back Handspring on the floor
  • Aerial Cartwheel
  • Front Tucked Somersault (Front Flip)
  • Back Tucked Somersault (Back Flip)
  • Back Tucked Somersault off the wall
  • Tumbling Runs

PLUS A BONUS:

A p.e. lesson showing how to teach a handstand. The handstand is the prerequisite skill for learning tumbling moves such as cartwheel, roundoff, front handspring, and back handspring.

We decided to add this lesson to the DVD because the teaching method and exercises used in it are different than those shown on Acrobatic Tumbling DVD.

This is a well-run lesson conducted by a competent teacher. The lesson flows well, keeps children's interest, with practically no time wasted. Exercises are well selected for the task and children's ability. Seeing those different exercises from the lesson may give more choices to instructors and students.
